Tomorrow, February 14th, is Valentine's Day , a special date for couples and also for retailers, as many marketing campaigns will be designed for this occasion.
For the more skeptical, this day is just another product of consumer society, a marketing invention and a sales strategy to encourage everyone who claims to be in love to spend lavishly on an ever-expanding array of products for lovers. While it's true that this day is very important for retailers, it's not a recent invention; its origins date back to the Roman Empire .
There are several theories that attribute the origin of Valentine's Day to this date.
Saint Valentine was a priest who served in Rome around the 3rd century . Emperor Claudius II ruled at the time , and he decided to prohibit marriage for young people because, in his opinion, single men without families made better soldiers, as they had fewer ties.
The priest considered the decree unjust and defied the emperor. He secretly performed marriages for young lovers (hence the popular belief that Saint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers).
Claudius found out and imprisoned him, eventually having him martyred and executed on February 14, 270.
Some believe it's a Christianized version of a pagan festival, since in ancient Rome they worshipped the god of love, whose Greek name was Eros and whom the Romans called Cupid. During this celebration, people sought the god's favor through gifts or offerings in order to find their ideal lover.
– In Nordic countries, it is during these dates that birds pair up and mate, hence this period is seen as a symbol of love and creation.
A good business opportunity.
Everyone knows that a good boyfriend or girlfriend isn't going to let this day pass without buying their partner a little something, and brands see this as a sales opportunity, especially during a period when sales are usually quite slow after Christmas.
